The verb poner is a common verb, generally meaning to put. The conjugation of poner has a number of irregularities:

• It is one of a handful of verbs with an irregular first person singular present tense form; pongo;
• It has an irregular past participle: puesto;
• It it one of a handful of verbs where in the future stem (the basis of the future and conditional tenses), the e of the infinitive is elided, and a -d- appears: pondré etc;
• In the preterite, one-syllable endings are not stressed, and the stem pus- is used: puse etc;
• Like all verbs with an irregular first person singular present tense form, the present subjunctive is based on this irregular form: ponga, pongas etc;
• It is one of a handful of verbs to have a special short imperative form: ¡pon!.
