The verb pedir has endings similar to other -ir verbs such as partir, but has a vowel change in the stem.

The unstressed e vowel changes to i in the following places:

• in the present and present subjunctive, when it is stressed (i.e. except before one of the stressed endings -imos, -ís, -amos or -áis);
• in the third person forms (singular and plural) of the preterite.

Another way of looking at this is that the vowel changes to i whenever it is followed by an ending that doesn't contain an i vowel.
